Clos du Val Merlot

Bernard Portet whose winemaking skills were gleaned from Château Latour identified the vineyards for Clos du Val in the premium area of Napa Valley. The original winemaking tenets of balance, elegance and complexity still guide Clos du Vals winemaking pursuits today. This Merlot displays a deep garnet colour and a powerful nose of sweet dark fruit, dried herbs, black currant and a touch of menthol. This wine is rich on the palate, with intense fruit that bursts in the mouth while maintaining a consistent lingering spice.

"Top flight Pomerol at a fraction of the price. A glossy insider’s bargain which should reward another two to four years patience, this is a superb, soft and exotic Merlot with glossy rich blackcurrant tones that mesh smoothly with chocolate and a flicker of spicy liquorice."

Very enjoyable wine. Surprisingly low alcohol (13.5%) for a premium Californian red. Complex and attractive nose of black fruits, eucalyptus, mint, and cloves. Fullish body, fresh acidity, with moderate tannins. Additional flavours of chocolate, plum, tobacco and fruitcake on the palate. Enjoyed with fillet steak in chasseur sauce - good living, particularly for a lowly Tuesday night!
