A Trio of Great Bourbons To Try

4th of July is just around the corner. To coincide with this, we have a range of American whiskeys on offer. With the recent announcement of tariffs, the price of Bourbon is set to only go up, so now is the best time to pick up some great whiskeys.

Here my three picks from this week’s special offers. These are all great sipped neat or over ice, but I’ve also include some delicious cocktail recommendations.

Bulleit Bourbon (Was €42.00/Now €35.00)

Augustus Bulleit produced the first batch of Bulleit Bourbon in 1830. Augustus was last seen aboard a flat-bottom boat loaded with whiskey barrels bound for New Orleans. The Bulleit brand of bourbon effectively disappeared with its instigator until being revived over a hundred years later in 1987 by great-great-grandson Tom Bulleit. Tom took inspiration from the original recipe to create a bourbon with a high rye content, 28% rye to be exact. Bulleit Bourbon is smooth and mellow yet dry with hints of orange zest, leading to a finish of vanilla and honey alongside a smoky and spicy rye.

Fancy a whiskey cocktail in this warm weather? How about a BLT? That’s bourbon, lemon and tonic. A signature Bulleit serve.

  • 50ml Bourbon
  • 150ml Tonic

Pour bourbon and tonic over ice and garnish with a wedge of lemon.

Eagle Rare 10-year-old Bourbon (Was €50.00/Now €44.95)

This is another bourbon with a high rye content and a great opportunity to see what ten years aging does for bourbon.This is whiskey to dispel the myth that bourbons are all sweet and one note. This bourbon is complex, dry and rich with cocoa, oak and leather tones. There are hints of orange and red fruit with some sweetness of vanilla, honey and walnuts before a lingering spicy finish.

Eagle Rare works wonderfully in a Whiskey sour

  • 50ml Bourbon
  • 25ml Fresh Lemon juice (about half a lemon squeezed)
  • 15ml Simple syrup*

(Optionally add a dash of egg white)

Add ingredients to a cocktail shaker, fill with ice and shake for about 10 seconds. Strain into a glass and garnish with a cherry.

Jack Daniels Single Barrel (Was €59.25/Now €49.25)

Technically Jack Daniels is not a bourbon, rather a ‘Tennessee Whiskey’, but I hope you’ll forgive me! The single Barrel is a  deeper, darker and richer expression of Jack Daniels. Bottled from a single barrel from the Tennessee distillery with each barrel selected by the Master Distiller for its individual quality.  These barrels are selected from the upper levels of the distillery rickhouse. Heat rises, causing the whiskey in the upper levels to age at a faster rate. Jack Daniels Single Barrel is more robust and less sweet than the No.7. You can still expect a touch of cereal sweetness but alongside this is some great spicy notes and charred oak tones together with classic vanilla and caramel.

The Single Barrel is great in an Old Fashioned

  • 50ml bourbon,
  • 12.5ml simple syrup*
  • 2 dashes of bitters

Mix together, pour into a rocks glass with some large chunks of ice and garnish with orange peel.

*To make simple syrup combine equal parts sugar and water. Heat in a saucepan over medium heat until the liquid is completely clear. Cool in the fridge, where it can be kept for 4 weeks
