We were very lucky this week to receive a visit from the winemaker behind the wonderful Insight range of wines, Eveline Fraser.
Eveline had made the long trip from New Zealand to for a short holiday in Burgundy which she very graciously agreed to delay just long enough to join us here in Dublin for a couple of tastings.
Now anyone who has visited one of our wine fairs will certainly have met Insight Vineyard’s owner Fleur, who has to be one of the most passionate winery owners we work with!
It was great to see first-hand that same passion is shared by Eveline, who after 20 years living in Marlborough is completely convinced that it is the best site in the world for growing grape and making wine.
Of course Eveline’s experience stretches further afield, having made wine at some leading wineries in Australia and France, but I suppose it is the time she spent as chief winemaker (2001-2009) at the Iconic Cloudy Bay should grab your attention.
In her time there, Eveline also worked intimately with Kevin Judd, the winemaker who can be credited with first producing the wonderfully aromatic Sauvignon Blancs that have now become Marlborough’s signature style.
It was while Eveline was Cloudy Bay winemaker that She first met Fleur, the fledgling Insight Vineyard was at that time, not yet producing any wine but was selling their grapes to Cloudy Bay.
On her many visits to the vineyard Eveline realised not just that Fleur had chosen a site that was amazingly well-suited to growing high-quality grapes, but also as I said earlier that they both shared the same passion for working with mother nature to produce interesting and delicious wines such as those highlighted below (in Eveline’s own words).
Insight Dry Riesling: Riesling is one of the greatest varieties, it really makes wonderful wines, I love the way it goes with a wide range of foods especially seafood dishes.
Insight Gewurztraminer: Gewurztraminer is a stunning, beautiful expressive varietal with gorgeous flavours of mandarin, lychee and rosewater. It works really well with slightly spicy food and is just a lovely match with Asian cuisine.
Insight Pinot Noir: Pinot Noir naturally has really beautiful aromatics, ripe cherries, strawberry, boysenberry, lots of lovely flavours that jump out of the glass at you and the palate is supple, elegant and very satisfying to drink.
