The O'Briens Wine Team have had a busy few weeks jetting around Europe with 6 of our lucky managers heading to Champagne for a few days, yours truly invited to Austria for the Wine Summit and our Wine Director, Lynne Coyle MW busy updating our wine portfolio in Bordeaux.
All of this travel helps ensure O'Briens maintains the most exciting wine range in Ireland and this week's new promotion includes a whole host of wines brand new to the range. June sees no less than 15 new wines from across the globe enter the lineup on special promotion.
I will introduce all of these wines over the next couple weeks but with the weather looking decidedly more autumnal than summery this week, here are some of the best new red wines to the range.
So fresh off the boat the Marqués de Griñón Crianza is only arriving in our stores this week! It comes from a venerable old family who have farmed vineyards across northern Spain for generations. This wine is a classic Rioja Crianza made with 100% Tempranillo and extended oak ageing.
The legal minimum time for Crianza to be stored in oak barrels is 12 months, but this wine spends 18 months in American oak barrels to impart a sweet spice and vanilla flavour profile to compliment the red berry and plummy fruits of the Tempranillo grape.
Enjoy With: A terrific value Rioja that would go wonderfully well with grilled meats and veg.
Our Wine Director Lynne Coyle MW was delighted to find this Sicilian delight. The Colpasso Nero D'Avola Appassimento is made in a style our customers love. A selection of the best Nero D'Avola grapes were hand-picked early in the season and dried in the hot Sicilian sunshine to raisin and concentrate their flavours and aromas.
When the rest of the grapes were harvested these intensely flavoured berries were added back in to the fermented wine to add a rich intensity. To add a little bit of extra flavour and complexity the wine is then put in oak barrels.
It offers an intense bouquet of red berries and dried fruits, as well as nuts, pepper and spice. The palate is full and ripe with well balanced tannins and a long fine finish. If you love our Luna Argenta wine you will adore this new addition to the family.
Enjoy With: Rich tomato-based pasta dishes and hard Italian cheese.
The Sacred Hill wines were very well received at this year's O'Briens Spring Wine Festival in May. They are a certified Sustainable winery located by some of the best vineyard sites in the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand's North Island.
Their Syrah offers aromas of dark chocolate, cranberries and wild thyme. The palate has fresh acidity to balance the dark berries and flavoursome spices of nutmeg and white pepper. Aged for 8 months in French oak to give extra complexity and richness of flavour this is an excellent example of what the Hawke's Bay region has to offer. Keep an eye out for the marvellous Sacred Hill Merlot which is also on offer through June.
Inside Track: Syrah & Shiraz are the same grape variety. It tends to be called 'Syrah' on the bottle when it is produced in an elegant, restrained Northern Rhône-style. Shiraz is usually used for the bolder, fruit-forward styles coming from warmer, New World regions (think Barossa Valley in South Australia).
Enjoy With: This is ideal with simple meats and burgers straight off the BBQ.
