Brand New Organic Italian Winery

Brand New Organic Italian Winery

There has been real excitement here at O'Briens about the brand new Cantina Orsogna wine range that arrived this month. Cantina Orsogna is a cooperative based on the east coast of Italy located beside Majella National Park- one of the most intact natural parks in Europe- and put sustainability at the heart of their philosophy.

New Organic and Bee Friendly Italian White, €17.95

Our new Vola Volé Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, for example, is 100% organic and also certified by Biodiversity Friend, a not-for-profit organisation that encourages bee and plant diversity in agriculture. And the winery goes one step further and cultivates yeast from local flower pollen to ferment this wine! For more information on this interesting range of wines the winery have a handy App that tells you the story behind each bottle's label.

More importantly, this delicious summery 100% Trebbiano is available in-store at your local O'Briens and online now.

Fresh Seafood risotto

The entire Cantina Orsogna team are committed to sustainability in their viticulture. But within the cooperative there is a group of 31 grape-growers that take this philosophy beyond organics and practice biodynamic farming. Named Lunaria, in honour of the local wolves that would howl at the full mooon, they eschew all chemical use in the winery and vineyard. Instead, biodynamic farmers use natural preparations that are applied with respect to the movement of celestial bodies. Fermentation is spontaneous, using indigenous yeasts.

This is a difficult and expensive way to make wine but sustainability and a social conscience is at the heart of Lunaria's philosophy. Their labels and label ink are 100% biodegradable, without the use of plastic. The cork is tied in place with string, a task performed by a local charity with proceeds going to help fund children with special needs. In addition they work with wildlife charities, including the World Wildlife Foundation's Euro Sea Turtle project.

But to make the cut with our Wine Director, Lynne Coyle MW, the wines have to be excellent too! And that they are. These two are my picks of the weekend. Both ideal for a lazy Bank Holiday weekend BBQ.

Beautiful Biodynamic Montepulciano €16.95 (down from €19.95)

The organically-grown Montepulciano grapes for this wine come from the hot Abruzzo region of eastern Italy. They are grown at an altitude of 300-450 metres, which helps catch the Mediterranean breezes and keep freshness in the grapes as they ripen. Aged in oak barrels and stainless steel tanks, it has a pronounced nose of black cherries and a delicious toasty note from the oak ageing. The palate is fairly full bodied with concentrated black fruit notes combined with cocoa, cinnamon and vanilla before a delicious long, almond finish.

Wonderful Organic Primitivo €15.95 (down from €18.95)

Again the grapes for this wine are biodynamic and organically certified. The Primitivo grape is usually associated with Puglia a little further south down Italy's boot and is known as Zinfandel in California. This unoaked example displays bright plum and cherry fruit aromas. The palate is warm, fairly tannic and intense with red fruit jam on the long finish. A wonderful wine to enjoy with a summer BBQ.
