20% Back continues this week until Sunday offering the ideal opportunity to treat yourself to those special bottles for Christmas.
For whites, look to the classics at this time of year, a white Burgundy or a Sancerre is a good option as both work equally pleasingly with turkey or goose depending on your personal taste. If you prefer a leaner, fresher and more aromatic style the Château de Fontaine-Audon Sancerre cuts a refreshing swathe of balancing acidity through rich gravy and all the trimmings. If you are seeking an altogether more opulent style then the Château Fuissé Les Clos, Pouilly - Fuissé is perfect, an exceptional Burgundy with white peach notes, a hint of toast and a cleansing citrusy finish
Similarly, on reds I like contrast, either a lighter more elegant style or something chunkier when the food requires it or the mood takes me. For the lighter style there is no better value than the single vineyard Vina Leyda La Brisas Pinot Noir. Its cherry like aromas and flavours progress to textural ripe tannins and hints of savoury spices, its restraint makes it perfect with food, even white meats and fish. For something more powerful but still food friendly Musella Ripasso offers a richness of body, and intriguing multi-layers of herbs, red berries and structure on the palate. This makes it an excellent choice for meat, game and hard cheese as well as a rich vegetable based dishes.
For fizz, if looking for the thrifty option then Mitó Frizzante is perfect; with aromas of apple and pear and a deliciously refreshing palate this is a wine rack/party essential. If going for luxury then Schramsberg Sparkling from Napa in the USA is an excellent award winning traditional method sparkling that makes a stylish aperitif, it can also be paired with starters or makes the perfect celebration bottle.
Don’t forget during the 20% back is the perfect time to buy a gift for your wine lover friends, I am certainly planning to invest in a few nice bottles of Bordeaux. Château la Claymore Lussac-St-Émilion is a Merlot-based Bordeaux, and would be an excellent choice for a seasonal treat: not only does the Merlot ensure an accessible, plush drinking wine style, the 2015 was one of the best vintages in the last few years, so the tannins are ripe and supple which adds to the wines exceptional quality.
