Redbreast is oft described as the definitive expression of traditional Single Pot Still Irish whiskey, being both the bestselling and the most awarded in the world. Here we will take a look at the expanding range of Redbreast whiskeys.
Welcome to the Redbreast family.
The redbreast brand officially dates back to 1912, when the first record of the name is found. However, the whiskey is most certainly older, at the time it is described as described as one of the "famous" brands produced by whiskey bonder Gilbeys. The fact that Redbreast was already a famous brand suggests that this may have been the nickname for Gilbey's Castle "JJ Liqueur" Whiskey 12 Years Old. The name 'Redbreast' itself refers to the bird, Robin Redbreast, and is attributed to the then Chairman of Gilbey's, who was an avid bird-fancier.
In 1985 Gilbeys stopped bottling Redbreast and the brand ceased to exist until 1991 when Irish Distillers reintroduced it back onto the market after a revamp. Redbreast is now only aged in the finest sherry and bourbon casks.
It is regarded as the definitive expression of traditional Pot Still whiskey and known as the Christmas cake of Irish whiskey due to its rich fruit and spicy character.
