On sale from today as an early Easter treat and far better than any chocolate egg, we have a stunning half-price Rioja Gran Reserva!
Conde de Valdemar Gran Reserva (€16.75 down from €33.49) is the top wine from the estate of Bodegas Valdemar in Oyón (Rioja, Alavesa) which has been owned and run by the Martinez-Bujanda family for five generations stretching back to 1869. But make no mistake this is not a winery which is afraid to embrace modern winemaking techniques, in style the wines offer the perfect balance of traditional and modern.
Unlike most other Rioja houses, Bodegas Valdemar use only grapes grown in the family’s own vineyards in Oyón, Logroño and Ausejo. The beauty of using only estate-grown fruit is that the superior quality of the grapes can be guaranteed and only the very best will be selected for the Gran Reserva, which itself is only made in the best vintages.
As you would expect Spain’s greatest red grape, Tempranillo accounts for most of the blend but there is also 10% Mazuelo (which adds elegance) and 5% Graciano (which adds complexity) in the mix.
Once these different grape varieties had been fermented and blended, the wine was aged for 28 months in French (75%) and American (25%) oak barrels with a combination of new and older oak.
All of this care and attention results in one of the finest examples of Rioja Gran Reserva available, which boasts a richer more full-bodied style with layer upon layer of dark bramble fruit and sweet vanilla spice.
I for one, think that this is the perfect wine choice to match up with spring lamb for Easter lunch.
