As we enter the festive period our minds begin to stray towards what wines to serve for those big festive occasions.  Whether it be for Christmas dinner, a gift or a bottle for the New Year's celebrations we all strive to serve quality wines to our family and friends.

Luckily the Irish wine press have been busy writing about many of the fantastic wines available at O'Briens and have some wonderful recommendations that are sure to impress even the most avid oenophile.  Below I have compiled some of the sparkling and white wine quotes from our top wine journalists to help you pick up that perfect bottle.

For the best red and sweet/fortified wines to enjoy over the festive period check out my blog HERE.

Best Festive Fizz

Granzamy Brut NV Champagne, France

Granzamy Champagne €24.95 (down from €34.95) from 20/12 to 24/12

"Fans of Bollinger will love the rich toastiness of this Champagne, which is made from 100% Pinot Meunier and has soft flavours of spice, apples and a touch of savoury cherry." -Corinna Hardgrave, Irish Independent 23/11/2018

"A stylish lightly creamy Champagne with subtle red cherries and strawberries. With lobster for a real splurge, but his would also go nicely with oysters and most seafood." -John Wilson, The Irish Times 01/09/2018

Croser 2013 Vintage Sparkling, Adelaide South Australia

Croser Vintage Sparkling €34.95

"The Piccadilly Valley specialises is sparkling wine (and resembles the Champagne region somewhat) and Croser is one of the best known producers in the region. A 60/40 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from vines planted in 1979 with good red berry fruit aromas mixed with brioche and almonds and good texture and richness." -Leslie Williams, The Irish Examiner 18/08/2018

Croser Rosé Sparkling NV, Adelaide South Australia

Croser Rosé Sparkling NV €24.95 (down from €27.95) for December

"A very classy pure Pinot Noir, with crisp strawberry and red-cherry fruits, and subtle brioche. Good concentration and length." -John Wilson, www.irishtimes.com 16/11/2018

The O'Briens Wine Team at Lagar de Costa earlier this year

Best Festive White Wines

Júlia Florista Branco, Portugal

Júlia Florista Branco €7.95 (down from €8.95) for December

"With fresh aromas of thyme and oregano on the nose, and a crisp palate of ripe lime threaded with the fresh herbs, this is a bargain- and vegan-friendly too." -Corinna Hardgrave, Irish Independent 23/11/2018

"Decent, slightly sweetish plump fruits with good acidity. At €7.95 very good value." -John Wilson, www.irishtimes.com 16/11/2018

Domaine Duffour Père Et Fils, Côtes de Gascogne, France

Domaine Duffour Père et Fils €9.95 (down from €12.95) for December

"I've always had a grá for the crisp fresh whites of Gascony, wines that were once quite simple and mainly distilled into Armagnac but now have a firm fan following in their own right. A blend of Colombard, Gros Manseng and Ugni Blanc this has lots of floral fruity aromas- lilies and limes and a hint of peach but with sprightly acidity and freshness." -Leslie Williams, The Irish Examiner 24/11/2018

Delheim Chardonnay Sur Lie, Stellenbosch South Africa

Delheim Chardonnay Sur Lie €23.95 (down from €26.45) for December

"Delheim goes above and beyond in terms of engaging with its workers and community. The wine's pretty good too. 90/100." -Martin Moran, The Sunday Times 13/10/2018

Lagar de Costa Albariño, Rías Baixas Spain

Lagar de Costa Albariño, €16.95 (down from €19.95) for December

"From the beach, this has a delightfully open-knit nose with aromas of peach and white blossom, and somehow dances across the palate with a lively minerality, a prickle of white pepper and a touch of salinity on the finish." -Corinna Hardgrave, Irish Independent 20/10/2018

"From a vineyard that runs down to the beach, so not surprisingly there's a salty note to compliment the pear and lemon. 90/100." -Martin Moran, The Sunday Times 30/09/2018

"Winemaker Sonia Costa is the third generation making wine in this lovely six-hectare estate metres from the beach in the Salnés sub-region of Rías Baixas. Clean salty peaches and lime and lemon aromas, fruity and ripe with textured greengage and apple fruits on the palate and salty freshness on the finish. Begging for a big saucepan of fresh mussels." -Leslie Williams, The Irish Examiner 13/10/2018

"'Albariño To Die For'

The fruit for this excellent Albariño comes from vines that literally run down to the Atlantic in Galicia at this family-run winery. This gives it a lovely minerality, salty notes on top of a stone fruit palate that has great structure and balance. ENJOY WITH : Grilled white fish and shellfish." -Matthew Nugent, The Irish Sun 13/10/2018

"From the beach, this has a delightfully open-knit nose with aromas of peach and white blossom, and somehow dances across the palate with a lively minerality, a prickle of white pepper and a touch of salinity on the finish." -Corinna Hardgrave, Irish Independent 20/10/2018

"As the evenings darken there is no need to go all hearty and hefty in your wine choices – a liquid echo of summer is sometimes called for and this Albariño is just the ticket. The exuberant floral and fruit flavours alone make this a must-buy; add in a more incisive stony note that hovers in the background and you have a real winner with enduring interest." -Raymond Blake, www.foodandwine.ie 26/10/2018

Terredora Greco di Tufo Loggia della Sera, Italy

Terredora Greco di Tufo €16.95 (down from €18.95) for December

"It might just be a giant antipasto plate followed by a hearty pasta dish or a few different pizzas. No matter. It will be molto simpatico and fabulously turkey-free. Wines? You need a gentle white with a fresh, mineral core like GRECO DI TUFO LOGGIA DELLA SERA, TERREDORA DIAPOLO 2016 down from €18.95 to €16.95 until end of December."

Mary Dowey, www.thegloss.ie December 2018

Terredora Fiano de Avellino, Italy

Terredora Fiano di Avellino €19.95

"Another super find from O'Brien's September sale. This elegant Italian white wine has beautiful mineral notes, light lemon citrus aromas and a flavour that stays on the tongue. Perfect with risotto and Parmesan." -Jean Smullen, Sunday World 16/09/2018
