It can be difficult to find a good quality bottle of wine in Ireland for under €10. Having the highest Excise Duty rates in Europe (between Duty and VAT the first €3.92 of every bottle of wine sold in this country goes in taxes) certainly plays a large part in this.
However, our O'Briens Wine team work hard and every bottle of wine sold in the company has been sourced and selected by our Wine Director and Master of Wine, Lynne Coyle. It is our choice to work mainly with small family wineries as they have control of their vineyards as well as the winemaking. This means that with the exception of the weather they are in control of the grape quality, the volume of grapes produced and the winemaking. In addition we favour working with regional co-operatives who are also representing families of growers and thus again have control of vineyard quality and winemaking. In taking this approach to our wine sourcing and selection, we can offer exciting wines at unbeatable value under €10. Below are five wines on promotion that offer excellent value this January.
Vegan Pinot Grigio
This is the newest Italian Pinot Grigio to hit our shelves and one of the prettiest labels in the range. With soft fresh citrus fruits, pear and peach flavours this has proven to be hugely popular with our loyal customers. It is Vegan friendly too for anyone trying to move to a more plant-based diet.
Vegan Food Match: A slightly spiced coconut and wild rice curry would be lovely with this wine. The sweet richness of the coconut would be cut through by the fruit and acidity of the wine.
Unbeatable Value Chilean Wines
With Chile accounting for 27% of all wine sales in Ireland it looks like our love affair with this vibrant South American country's wine offering is continuing unabated. The length of Chile's coastline and varied soils, coupled with the joint influences of the Andes mountains and Pacific ocean gives Chile a diverse terroir capable of cultivating many grape varieties.
Our love of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc shows no sign of ending and it's easy to see why with this deliciously herbal fresh and fruity aromatic wine. Crisp acidity and juicy tropical fruit with an attractive zesty lime character and a dry, tangy grapefruit finish.
Food Pairing: The crisp acidity and dry finish as well as the herbal touch would pair ideally with shellfish. Scallops and morcilla (Spanish black pudding) would be a delight.
Vegetarian Food Option: Soft mild cheeses need good fruit and refreshing acidity to pair with the fatty texture. Wines such as Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc are the ideal choice.
As with Sauvignon Blanc we simply can't get enough good value Chilean Merlot at the moment. They tend to be soft and fruity with a moderate alcohol level and smooth tannin profile. This wine offers all the above: plump blackberry and plum fruit with easy drinking soft tannins makes this a popular crowd-pleasing style. At €8.95 this makes a perfect wedding or house party wine.
Food Pairing: The soft tannins and bright fruity style means this is ideal to have with lighter meat dishes- roast pork or chicken with rice would be perfect.
Great Value Australian Bin-End Wine
This is one of the best value wines to hit our shelves in recent years. Australian wine of this quality is creeping up in price, so when our wine team were offered a bin-end deal on this wine they jumped at it.
This wine has a lifted perfumed nose of raspberries and red plums with hints of spice and cinnamon. The palate is plump and full showing ripe cassis, bright plums and brambly fruits, well integrated tannins and a lingering finish that is well supported by toasty oak. Excellent value but stocks are running low, so take advantage of this bargain while you can.
Food Match: A ripe Aussie Shiraz and Cabernet is screaming out for a plate of BBQ food- you don't have to wait until Summer to enjoy some char-grilled meat and veg.
Stunning Value Spanish Wine
With €6 off the Carta Roja Gran Reserva there are few better quality-to-value wines on our shelves. Coming from Jumilla in the southeastern corner of Spain, this wine shows the wonderful potential and value when you step away from the better-known northern red wines of that country. With two years in oak and a further five years resting in bottle, this wine balances wonderful ripe fruits with savoury leather and tobacco spice complexity from the American oak. This makes a wonderful winter warmer at a very affordable price.
Food Match: Try this with a rich chicken and chorizo stew served with crusty white bread for a delicious Spanish-inspired meal.
