Here at O’Briens we are very proud of our wide and varied wine range from across the globe. And unsurprisingly so: lead by our Wine Director and Master of Wine, Lynne Coyle, our team source over 800 exciting lines from across the wine-producing world.  From the classic Old World regions of France, Spain and Italy to the lesser known areas within Uruguay and Romania, we stand or fall by the quality of wines we source for our customers.  As a family-run business, O’Briens Wines are dedicated to putting small, quality-focussed wineries to the forefront of our range and offering excellent value-for-money. With our Annual Wine Sale running until 23rd September, we have even better value in-store and online now.

As proud as we are to shout from the rooftops about our exciting wine range, it is very rewarding when our national wine journalists recognise the effort and resulting quality we offer. Below I have pulled together a selection of the recommendations our wines have received in the past fortnight from Irish newspapers.

Our brand new Portuguese red impressed John Wilson at €16.95.  At the €10.95 Sale price it is proving an immediate customer hit:

S&R, Douro Portugal, 2016
“Ample Sweet/Sour dark plum fruits, with a touch of spice and a good dry finish. Try it with a good rare steak.”
John Wilson, Irish Times 25/08/2018

S&R Douro Red, €10.95 down from €16.95 for the Wine Sale

An Aussie Malbec is something of a rarity, but our Katnook 10 Acres Malbec from Coonawarra made waves with the press last weekend, getting two recommendations and offering great value on Sale at €14.95 (down from €21.95):

Katnook Estate 10 Acres Malbec
“Coonawarra was a very remote area back in the 19th century, and remains several hours' drive from any major city today. Despite this, a messainic figure called John Riddoch returned to tell people about a fruit-growing paradise he had discovered. Thousands were hooked and bought ten-acre plots of the red fertile soils. Ten acres became a byword for a pioneer. Katnook's 10 Acre Malbec offers a modern pioneering move. It is more of a ripe and savoury Bordeaux-style Malbec than a spicy, plush Argentinian Malbec. Very attractive at €21.95, more so at this sale price.”
Tomas Clancy, The Sunday Business Post 02/09/2018

Katnook Estate 10 Acres Malbec
“Recent days have been filled with marvellous Malbecs, from Chile Argentina and France. And then this beautifully crafted Aussie wine comes along. Jammy (in a perfectly nice way) and plummy, it has a good tannic bite and extremely good length. Good now- and for the next three years. ENJOY WITH: Any red meat.”

Leslie Williams was presenting Bacardi smoked Salmon at Electric Picnic last weekend, but was also expounding the virtues of two of our premium Old World reds that have up to €10 Off until 23rd Septmeber:

Ascheri Barolo 2014
“Another wine worth ageing. I recently drank an excellent 2009. Noramally costing €36, this represents a saving of €10. Aromas of smoky red fruits with touches of tar and cold tea, lithely fruity and fresh with good complexity and textured taut fruits on the finish. These days the best Barolo costs €60 plus, if you can afford them, go for it. This suits me just fine.”
Leslie Williams, The Irish Examiner 01/09/2018

Ascheri Barolo €25.95 down from €35.95 in the Annual Wine Sale

GB Cigalus 2016
“This biodynamic wine is normally €39 so is well worth picking up at this price. It also ages well. I recently drank a delicious 2012 that could easily have been kept longer. Aromas of wild dark fruits tinged with herbs and flowers (thyme, heather)- packed with rich plum and blackberry fruits, complex, textured and delicious.”
Leslie Williams, The Irish Examiner 01/09/2018

Gérard Bertrand Cigalus €29.95 down from €38.95 for the Annual Wine Sale

A couple of our customers' favourite Sparkling wines also come highly recommended by John Wilson and Corina Hardgrave.  The Granzamy Champagne was my Fizz Friday recommendation two weeks ago and this week is appearing as one of John's 'deathbed meal' wines! A rare Champagne made from 100% Pinot Meunier, it is chock full of fresh red fruits and a smooth mouthful of fizz.

Granzamy Brut NV Champagne
"A stylish lightly creamy Champagne with subtle red cherries and strawberries. With lobster for a real splurge, but his would also go nicely with oysters and most seafood."
John Wilson, Irish Times 01/09/2018

Granzamy NV Brut Champagne €29.95 down from €34.95 for the Annual Wine Sale

Valhondo Rosé Brut Cava
"A real bargain when it's on special offer, this Cava has ripe flavours of crushed strawberries and cherries, and a delicious, creamy mousse of bubbles. A perfect apéritif and wonderful with a cherry tomato salad. "
Corinna Hardgrave, Irish Independent 01/09/2018

Valhondo Rosado Brut Cava €14.95 down from €17.95 for the Annual Wine Sale
