I am a huge fan of the Albariño grape variety and last year I was lucky enough to visit the grape's spiritual home in Spain's northwestern Galicia region with the O'Briens management team (read about our visits here & here). During the visit we met up with David Geary from Bodeaga Paco y Lola for a first look at the brand new Albariño that would be landing on our shelves this year. I tweeted a Sneak Peek from a little seafood restaurant on the Galician coast back in August.
The #OBriensWineTour crew are off again in @AFontedoVino in #Galicia. These @pacolola Albariño are a perfect match for the fresh local seafood dishes. The Follas Novas is in the shops now but the Ophalum is our new Albariño hitting the shelves next year. #wine #winelover pic.twitter.com/hn3lkJ7wZQ

The store managers were equally enamoured by this wine and also took to the Twitter machine: since then we have had customers asking when it would land in-store! This proves how popular this wine style is in Ireland right now and how much our loyal customers trust our store managers' recommendations.
Well, I am delighted to announce that the wait is over and that this stunning little wine has finally hit our shop floors- just in time for Mother's Day! To give our customers an opportunity to try it for themselves we have Ophalum Albariño on the tasting table this weekend and on promotion with €6 off until the end of April.
This zesty Albariño is made exclusively for O'Briens Wines by the Paco y Lola winery in the Salnés Valley. This valley is in the heart of Rías Baixas' northern vineyards. Their close proximity to the cooling influence of the Atlantic ocean and exposure to the storms that regularly roll in off the sea gives a crisp freshness and refreshing saline mineral quality to the wine. Opahlum offers the typical pear and citrus fruit profile of Galician Albariño with this salinity on the long tropical fruit finish. If you are a fan of our Contrapunto Albariño you will adore this fantastic new addition to our range.
ALBARIÑO FOOD MATCH:
The crisp acidity and saline character makes this wine an ideal pairing to cut through oily fish tapas dishes. Sardines or Mackerel are delicious cooked over a BBQ flame. Add a squeeze of lemon and sprinkle of salt for a delicious food and wine pairing.
As delighted as we are with our new Albariño we have plenty of other exciting wines in our promotional lineup this month. Beside the Ophalum Albariño we will have the Norton DO.C. Malbec available to taste in-store this weekend in your local O'Briens.
Although this wine has been patiently sitting on our shelves for the past couple of years, it has not appeared on our floor promotion for quite some time and a wine worth reacquainting yourself with.
Bodega Norton are now owned by the Swarovski family, who continue to strive for excellence in their wines. This Malbec is from Luján de Cuyo D.O.C., the first appellation in Mendoza. The grapes come from high altitude vineyards, which helps to retain freshness and acidity in the wine. The palate is full of ripe red fruits and black pepper spice. Twelve months in new and second use French oak barrels gives a nice tannic structure and toasty complexity before a long lasting finish.
Another delicious Malbec to match with your Easter lamb. Casa de Uco is a stunning estate located in the Uco Valley of Mendoza, tucked against the foothills of the Andes Mountains. Their Casa de Uco El Salvaje Organico is 100% Malbec from fully organic vineyards located 1300 metres above sea level. This elevation maintains a fresh acidity in the grapes, giving a surprisingly fresh, supple wine whilst retaining all the big punchy fruit flavours expected from a Mendoza Malbec.
MALBEC FOOD MATCH:
The classic match for Malbec is a good lump of steak, cooked on n open flame. But the two Malbecs above have a little more finesse and style than most. The freshness in the wines from the high altitude would make either an ideal match for Easter lamb.
This 100% Sauvignon Blanc would make an ideal Mother's Day present. Located just across the river from Sancerre, Caves de Pouilly is a group of small growers who came together to produce tremendously good quality and value Pouilly-Fumé. With soft citrus and stone fruit aromatics and a typical smokey gunflint mineral note that defines the Pouilly-Fumé region. The palate is silky with delicious lime, gooseberry, chalky minerality and a touch of tropical and stone fruits on a long satisfying finish with good refreshing acidity.
Pouilly-Fumé Food Match
The smoky and chalky mineral palate of this classic Pouilly-Fumé would pair wonderfully with the umami and salty flavours of oysters, scallops or other fresh shellfish.
With Mother's Day this week and Easter only three weeks later we have our biggest lineup of promotional wines since Christmas. There are plenty more fantastic wines on promotion in store now, so head down to your local O'Briens where our friendly and enthusiastic staff will happily help you pick out that perfect bottle.
