The Irish summer well and truly arrived last weekend at Taste of Dublin- by which I mean we had all four seasons crammed in to each day! But this week looks like it is shaping up to be bright and warm. Last week I looked at some great new BBQ reds, so here are some brand new white wine recommendations to enjoy from our current promotional lineup.
Touraine is a French wine region located near the city of Tours along the Loire river. It is best known for its crisp white wines made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape and Les Secrets de Sophie above is a great example of the region and with €4 Off for June well worth exploring.
Since 1885, 6 generations of the Bougrier Family have been farming the Loire Valley and they produce some of our most popular wines. This brand new Touraine Sauvignon Blanc comes from carefully selected vineyard plots to ensure only the best quality grapes make the grade. Aged on the fine lees (dead yest cells) to give a rich complexity that rounds out the crisp and refreshing first attack of acidity and citrus fruit flavours. On the long finish there is a welcome chalky minerality similar to a good Sancerre.
Ideal for meaty and oily fish dishes, such as sardines a la plancha. Or try this sardines with red chili on toast.
TopTip: Sardines are delicious on the BBQ- their oily skins ensures they don't dry out like more delicate fish.
Sticking with the Sauvignon Blanc grape but moving to the opposite side of the wine producing world we are delighted to introduce Marlborough Ridge Sauvignon Blanc. Coming from top producer Giesen, presented in a beautiful modern bottle and with €6 Off for June this makes a delightful gift or party wine.
Crisp and fresh, the grapes for this wine come from premium sites across the Wairau Valley and are grown on sustainably managed vineyards. The winemaking processes are kept to a minimum to allow the pure varietal expression and Marlborough region shine in the glass. The palate expresses supple fresh citrus and stone fruits, dried herbs before a zesty long finish. This is exactly why Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most popular styles of wine in the world.
Enjoy this chilled on a warm day with this black bean, mango and feta summer salad.
Top Two Rosé Picks
When the sun starts shining there are few more enjoyable pleasures than relaxing in the garden with friends and sharing a bottle of good rosé. This year sees the return of the always popular Buy One Bottle of Rosé, Get a Second Bottle Half Price promotion in O'Briens Wine. With 14 rosé wines to choose from, there is something to suit every taste and budget. We have a number of brand new wines in the lineup this year including these top two picks for this week.
For those of you who have been living under a social media rock for the past few weeks, O'Briens Wine Dirctor and Master of Wine, Lynne Coyle, launched her own rosé wine this year. Made in conjunction with Tandem Wines in Spain's Navarra region, it is a low-intervention, wild ferment wine made with the Garnacha grape. I love it, but my judgement may be bias, as Lynne is my wine mentor, so here are some wonderful press reviews this wine has already received.
"This is a stunning rosé from Navarra, made by Master of Wine Lynne coyle at O'Briens Wine. Coyle has made this is conjunction with Bodegas Tandem and has brought all her academic and practical skills to bear here. This grenache-based rosé has been organically raised, is vegan and made as natural as possible including wild yeast fermentation. In the glass it simply exudes summer joy, clean bright fruit and a lifted warm heather and spiced finish." - Tomás Clancy, Sunday Business Post 26/05/2019
"The delicately dry, pale pink rosé, with enticing ripe raspberry/strawberry aromas and a soft, balanced red fruit palate that stole the show. Rós has two proud parents- Alicia and Lynne Coyle, the wine buyer at O'Briens Wine. Honoured to be among the first to taste a wine that will be a huge hit this summer." - Matthew Nugent, The Irish Sun 13/04/2019
"As you might hope with a name that translates as 'Rose' as Gaeilge, this is made by an Irish winemaker- none other than O'Briens Wine Director and resident Master of Wine Lynne Coyle. Made from wild ferment Garnacha and as is typical in Spain this is a little darker with a distinct strawberry aroma, and a textured dry-fruity finish. Second bottle half price." - Leslie Williams, The Irish Examiner 25/05/2019
"Rós means rose in Irish and Scots Gaelic, and this was made by Lynne Coyle of O'Briens (who is originally from Scotland), in conjunction with the Tandem winery, in Navarra in Spain. Made using hand-picked Garnacha grapes, this is a medium-bodied rosé, with floral aromas and ripe, rounded strawberry fruits, good, refreshing acidity and a nice dryish finish. Very tasty wine, perfect on its own but even better with summer salads and barbecued fish." - John Wilson, The Irish Times 23/05/2019
"Look out for this new dry Spanish Rosé made by Lynne Coyle- a Master of Wine who buys wines for O'Briens. Made in Navarra from a red grape called Grenache, it has tons of summer fruit flavours, raspberry and strawberry." - Jean Smullen, The Sunday world 12/05/2019
"Often, delicately coloured rosés can be a bit short on flavour, but Lynne Coyle's is silky, packed with ripe strawberry and red berry flavours, balanced with a fresh crispness." - Corinna Hardgrave, The Irish Independent 04/05/2019
That's a pretty unanimous result from the Irish wine press! There is a limited supply, however, so grab a bottle or two while stocks last.
The delicious red fruit flavours and silky palate would pair perfectly with salmon.
Emiliana own vineyard sites across Chile and are the largest supplier of estate-grown organic wines in the world! This organic rosé offers gentle strawberry and red cherry aromas. The palate is medium in weight with fresh summer fruits and a delicate, silky palate. The finish offers crisp acidity and lingering red fruit flavours. At €11.21 per bottle when you buy two, this offers exceptional value for money.
The crisp acidity and textured palate would lend this wine to a wide range of foods, from lightly spiced Asian dishes to grilled fish.
There are dozens of other promotional wines available, so shop online or drop in to your local O'Briens store where our friendly and knowledgeable staff will gladly help you pick out a bottle from our exciting new ranges.
