This may seem strange, given that I was writing about warming autumnal wines just yesterday, but as I look out the office window today, into the Indian Summer that we seem to be experiencing, all I can think about are wines for sipping out of doors in the last of the sunshine!
With aromas of intense white peach and apricot and a touch of cool climate citrus blossom, fine crisp acidity and terrific balance, Longview Back label Viognier (€8.99 down from €13.99) is a wine that is tailor-made for easy drinking in the sun!
From Los Vascos, the Chilean outpost of Chateau Lafite, this outstanding Sauvignon Blanc (€9.99 down from €14.99) is probably the most fresh, grassy example we have ever seen from Chile. Easily the closest thing to Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc that we have tasted from this region. Fantastic and bursting with fruit, this must to be tasted to be believed. It is that good!
Puiattino Pinot Grigio (€11.99 down from €17.99) is in a completely different league to most other Pinot Grigio. The grapes are grown on the hilly terrain of the premium region of Collio. These vineyards are cultivated according to organic principles, yielding a wine which is refined, elegant and with greater structure. Pale in colour, with fresh grassy notes and hints of green apples. The palate has a touch of honeyed richness but is fresh and steely, making it a wonderful aperitif.
Mas Belles Eaux is owned and run by Bordeaux superstar estate Pichon-Longueville, this domaine excels in producing premium Languedoc wines. This rich, dry Rosé (€14.49 buy one get 2nd ½ price) is one of the region's finest. Try this with pan fried tiger prawns in chilli and garlic for a perfect pairing.
The weatherman tells us this sunny spell will extend well into next week, but don’t forget the O’Briens Wine Sale ends this Sunday!
