Spanish Selection

Spanish wines obviously hold a special in the hearts of Irish wine-drinkers, a quick look at the stats reveals that we are Spain’s 20th largest market, which is really an incredible position given our relatively small population.

So there should certainly be plenty of you out there who will be interested in our Spanish wine sale, which begins this Wednesday, June 10th and is running right through the weekend until Tuesday the 16th.

With over 100 wines covering a wide variety of wine styles, discounts of up to 44% and sale prices starting from just €7.99 there's something here to suit everyone, so there can be no better time to pick up a few bottles.

Of course a great deal of the popularity of Spanish wines can be attributed to the wines of Rioja, but to say the story stops there would be ignoring the renaissance that has taken place in Spanish winemaking over the past two decades.

I have highlighted below just a few of the exciting modern wines we now import from some of the best new-wave wineries in Spain, but to see our full range, click here or even better why not drop in to your local O’Briens store.

The region of Rías Baixas isvery different to the common perception of Spain, it has a cool climate and significant rainfall due to its proximity to the Atlantic, this climate and the region's rocky soils are perfect for the production high-quality white wines and Albariño is the most important variety. Contrapunto (€18.493 for2) is a Classic Albariño, citrus and floral aromas, with a touch of stone fruit. On the palate, itsmouth-filling fruity character is perfectly balanced with the vibrant zingy acidity. Tasting this wine, it's easy to see why Albariño is now one of Ireland's favourite wines.

Predominantly made with Garnacha Blanca, Jaspi Blanc (€13.19 down from €16.49) is a superb Catalan wine from the region of Terra Alta, it has a mineral-rich, structured palate which rivals great Chablis or Sancerre married with an abundance of vibrant fruit, this truly is one of the most exciting modern Spanish whites. If this is the face of quality modern Spanish wines then it is going to be hard for the rest of the wine world to keep up!

Calatayud is a wine region that sits in the Sierra de la Virgen mountain range high above the Ebro river valley, and just to the south of Rioja. From here we have Cruz de PiedraGarnacha (€9.99 down from €13.99) which is a fruity, cherry-flavoured red produced from an ancient vineyard, this wine is cool-fermented and doesn't see any oak in order to preserve the grape’s lip-smacking fruit character.

One of our most exciting new listings, Encuentro (€11.19 down from €13.99) is made with 100% Bobal grapes. Although it is still relatively un-known in the wider wine-world, Bobal is actually the third most planted grape variety in Spain. Here in its native region of Utiel-Requena in Valencia, working exclusively with organically-grown fruit from high altitude vineyards, the wine-making team at Bodega Aranleón have crafted a super-smooth red with flavours ripe of blackberry and blueberry along with some delicious herbal notes.

Up until the 1980s Navarra, a producer of reds, whites and rosés, was best known for its traditional rosé wines. Navarra has an excellent climate for the cultivation of vineyards very similar to that of neighbouring Rioja, today some of Spain's finest reds are produced here such asArs in Vitro(€10.99 down from €14.99),from a small 'quality obsessed' producer, this sensational, savoury, complex wine is one of the finest reds we have ever seen from Navarra. It is multi-layered with deep, dark-berry and damson fruit, well-structured and long-lasting flavours - a class act.

Luzon Crianza(€11.79 down from €15.99) is from Jumilla in Southeast Spain where the climate is continental verging on to arid, moderated by the proximity of the Mediterranean. This incredible wine is bursting with rich black-berried fruit and measured oak, full of flavour and yet very balanced, we cannot recommend this one highly enough, Luzon seem to beable to create wines that perform at a level way above their price bracket!
