The wine-loving community of Clontarf were out in force at Tibor’s Bistro last night, to taste the delicious Château Caraguilhes range of wines with Winemaker, Etienne Besancenot, who is extremely quality-focused and produces consistently great wines from the local grape varieties.
A great night was had by all, and needless to say, the wines went down extremely well.
Château Caraguilhes is rated amongst the top Corbières estates and is the largest grower of certified organically-grown grapes in the region. This award winning winery been committed to full organic farming since 1987, when it was virtually unheard of anywhere else.
After an introductory glass of Cava which was served alongside some Salmon mousse, we moved on to the first of Etienne’s wines, Château Caraguilhes Classique (€15.99), which is a blend of 50% Syrah, 40% Carignan, 10% Grenache Noir. This blend has layers of concentrated dark fruits, blackberry and blackcurrant, mingled with a hint of cherry and smoky flavours which perfectly complemented the Chicken liver Pâté it was served with.
Next up was the Château Caraguilhes Prestige (€18.99), which is their oak-aged Reserve, and is a seriously stylish wine. Velvety smooth and brimming with sweet dark-berried fruit, this lush, oaked red is of a quality level far above its price. It proved to be the ideal partner for the Duck Rillettes.
We ended our tasting with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses and the Château Caraguilhes Solus (€22.49), which was the undisputed star of the show. This wine really is fantastic, if you have ever doubted Corbières ability to make classy wine, then this wine will change your mind forever. Deep concentrated ripe and open in style with richness and balance that just make it so drinkable.
