Here at O’Briens, we are constantly looking to work with dynamic winemakers worldwide, to bring an exciting range of wines to the shelves in our stores.
In that vein, we are delighted to welcome, one of the newest arrivals, Lisa McGuigan into the fold. To describe Lisa as dynamic though, is surely an understatement. When we first met with Lisa, we were completely blown away by her enthusiasm, energy and her irreverent take on the established wine world, but more importantly we were absolutely stunned by the quality of the wines.
Consolidating a lifetime in wine, Lisa McGuigan has launched her own independently owned wine label, aptly named Lisa McGuigan Wines.
As fourth generation of the established Hunter Valley winemaking family, founder of the successful Tempus Two label for McGuigan Simeon Wines and in recent years, wine retailer, Lisa has seen the evolution of the wine industry first hand, and her eponymous label embodies what she has learned – and loves - about wine.
“I started Tempus Two in 1999 from my garage, and when I left to open my wine retail stores in 2007 it was a global brand of more than 250,000 cases. While I was proud of its success, I missed the hands-on challenges of those early days,” Lisa says.
“Back then, the formula was to make the best wine I could from great little parcels of fruit, and take it to the people in the hope they would be as excited about it as I was. I didn’t have the resources or the experience to do it on my own then, but now is my time, and I am returning to that original formula – albeit now as a small business owner.”
Lisa’s Silver Collection Chardonnay(€14.99), is made using specially selected parcels of fruit, sourced from across South Australia. The blend comprises, 95% Chardonnay & 5% Pinot Grigio, and the wine has aromas of ripe melon and peach with an underlying floral complexity. The tropical fruits on the nose follow through to the palate and are balanced by a deliciously cool lemon rind finish. For a perfect match, try it with a Chicken Caesar salad.
The Silver Collection Shiraz (€14.99),has aromas of redcurrant, raspberry and pepper which are complemented by subtle sweet spice from the addition of oak at fermentation. Delicious ripe fruit flavours of raspberry and plum on the palate, which is medium bodied with silky tannins and a long finish. This is a wine that is crying out to be paired with some barbecued or char-grilled red meats.
