As we continue to enjoy this bright start to the year many of us are taking advantage and spending plenty of time outdoors. After spending an afternoon in the crisp winter air there is nothing better than relaxing with some winter warming foods and a nice bottle of red wine. To help you pick that perfect wine the O'Briens Winter Reds promotion continues. This is a selection of 10 winter warming red wines ideal to accompany rich winter vegetable and stew dishes in front of the fire with good friends. When you buy one bottle, you can pick up a second bottle half price* and you can mix and match across the range to discover something new and exciting.Last week I looked at five wines from this promotion, so this week I have included the balance, including a vegan and organic Spanish red new to our range.
Vegan Red Wine
Vegan and made from organically grown Monastrell (better known as Mourvèdre) grapes, this wine is a great example of the quality available when you step outside of the classic wine regions in Spain. Bodegas Luzón are located in Jumilla, in the warm southern region of Murcia, and are considered to be one of the best wineries in the Denominación. This organic wine offers soft red fruit flavours and a herbaceous lift with smooth tannin and a long finish. Incredible value when you can pick up two bottles for under €20 during our Winter Reds promotion.
Vegan Food Match: The bright unoaked fruit flavours and refreshing acidity of this wine would match wonderfully with a Mediterranean pulse and hummus platter.
What The Press Say: "A hand-harvested, organic red from a high plateau in Murcia, which is 100pc Mourvèdre, or Monastrell as is it known in Spain. Fruity and fleshy, with flavours of blackberry, blueberry and a touch of orange zest.." -Corinna Hardgrave, Irish Independent, 12/01/219
Winter Warming Spanish Grenache
The grapes for this unoaked Garnacha (Grenache to the Francophiles amongst you) come from old vines in the northern Spanish region of Navarra. These gnarled old vines produce a small quantity of very good quality fruit that results in a deep purple wine offering intense black fruit, thyme and rosemary aromas. The fine textured palate offers fresh dark fruits and a savoury finish. Made in very small quantities we are lucky to get an allocation of this excellent wine.
Food Match: The lifted fresh thyme and rosemary aromas would match wonderfully with any rich dish containing those flavours. Think Spanish/Italian tomato and herb rice/pasta dishes.
What the Press Say: "Fresh, smooth, crunchy, savoury dark fruits with a lovely herbal touch." -John Wilson, The Irish Times, 15/12/2019
Food-Friendly Unoaked Bordeaux
It would be hard to offer a selection of quality red wine without including a Bordeaux and this Petit Château is a delicious Merlot-driven blend (Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc making up the balance). Being unoaked and hailing from the fabulous 2015 vintage Château Haut Pingat displays pure fresh fruit flavours of cherry, redcurrant and plum, before a long fresh finish.
Food Match: The unoaked style of this wine would lend itself wonderfully to sweet red meat: a good rack of lamb with rosemary and garlic would be ideal.
Rich Warming Tempranillo
This is one of our best value wines from Spain. The unusual blend of Tempranillo and Petit Verdot grapes are in high demand, hence the playful label and name (Most Wanted!). The very ripe, high-quality grapes have yielded a succulent juicy red with plenty of rich blackberry fruit and a pleasant spicy character. The light touch of oak adds some vanilla flavours and a savoury complexity to the finish.
Food Match: The rich body of this wine would marry itself to richer meat paella dishes (try the traditional Valencian rabbit paella for something a bit different) or good jamón Iberico and hard cheese.
Smooth Winter Shiraz
Delheim are considered to be one of the best quality estates in Stellenbosch– a family estate who not only make elegant modern wines but are also committed to an intensive bio-diversity agenda within their vineyards and forests.
This delicious blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon offers up aromas of prune, blueberries and warm spice with dark chocolate and juicy bramble fruits on the palate. The wine spends 13 months in oak, but a good part of that is previously used barrels, so it is well-integrated, adding a fine toasty complexity to the silky tannins.
Vegetarian/Vegan Food Match: The warm spicy flavours and silky tannins would match a wide variety of foods, but why not try something a little different- a green lentil curry, which can be adapted to be vegan quite easily. Mind you make it mild, however, as the tannins in a red wine can become astringent when paired with too much chilli.
