In 1757 the wine trading ship, the "Two Sisters" of Dublin, was seized while sailing between Bordeaux and Dublin. Also taken were the renowned 125 "Bordeaux Dublin Letters" written by the Irish expatriate community in Bordeaux. These letters are one of the most historically important artefacts linking these two great cities and are the inspiration for our wine. For the 1757 cuvee the grapes were sourced from small, high quality left and right bank vineyards to represent the classic characters of the region. Benefiting from the technical expertise of winemaker Daniel Llose and Lynne Coyle, O'Briens Wines have created a unique Bordeaux wine using the dark berried Cabernet Sauvignon for its firm tannins and intriguing spices blended with Merlot for its suppleness and defining elegance.

In the vineyard

Made with 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, the grapes for 1757 were sourced from three small vineyards in the classic communes of Pauillac, Graves and Canon-Fronsac. The Cabernet Sauvignon was grown in the vineyard of L'Enclos, Pauillac, which adjoins Cordeillan-Bages and is planted on deep gravel and sand, and also in the vineyard of Bel Air, Graves which benefits from the same gravel soils as found in the neighbouring Pessac Léognan appellation. The Merlot comes from the Pey Labrie vineyard which is located on a hilltop overlooking the Dordogne river, this vineyard represents the very best of Canon-Fronsac and its soils are not unlike the best Saint-Émilion terroir which sits to the west of this hill.

In the winery

Using selected parcels of fruit from Bordeaux's left and right banks, this blend was put together by O'Briens Head of Wine Buying, Lynne Coyle and Winemaker Daniel Llose who is the consultant oenologist at Château Lynch Bages & Château Pichon-Longueville. Once the blending was completed, the wine was aged for 12 months in 100% new French oak barrels.
