Sophie Schaal and her husband Julien established their winery in the charming village of Hunawihr in Alsace. Sophie focuses on reflecting the differing character of the vineyards through her wines.
Alsace occupies the foothills of the Vosges Mountains in northeastern France. These mountains shelter the vineyards from rain and create one of the driest climates in the country. The region's vineyards are planted on a rich mosaic of soils such as granite, limestone and schist. Each of these transmits its character to the wines, making some of the most compelling white wines in France.
Sophie Schaal studied oenology in Dijon and established her winery in Alsace with her husband Julien. Sophie's Riesling is zesty and mineral, shaped by clay-limestone soils. Her Pinot Gris is rounded and textured with exotic spicy undertones, while her Gewurztraminer is aromatic and spiced. Across all her wines, Sophie's approach favours restraint in the cellar, letting the fruit and the soil do the talking.
