The Taste of Bordeaux

Description

The Bordeaux wine region in southwestern France, centred around the Gironde estuary. It has a mild maritime climate and is known for blended wines rather than single varieties. Red Bordeaux typically combines Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, producing structured, age-worthy wines. The region is divided into areas such as the Left Bank, Right Bank, and Entre-Deux-Mers, and Bordeaux has a long history of influential wine classification systems. This selection of wines from both sides of the Gironde River.

This set contains:

  • Château Mauvesin Barton 2022 (Moulis) (red wine) - Château Mauvesin Barton is a historic estate in Moulis-en-Médoc, with Irish connections & centuries of winemaking heritage. The 46-hectare vineyard lies on clay-gravel & fine gravel soils, ideal for Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon & Cabernet Franc. The wine is aged in oak barrels, one third of which are new. The 2022 vintage offers aromas of ripe blackcurrant and blackberry fruit with floral and spicy notes, underpinned by hints of mint. The mouthfeel is elegant and velvety, with well-integrated fine oak that lead to a long , savoury finish.

  • Château Saint-Poly (Saint-Emilion) (red wine) - Château Saint-Poly Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is made predominantly with Merlot grapes grown on 35 year old vines in south-west facing vineyards. This is a great example of a smooth, beautifully mature, barrel-aged Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. An excellent vintage and time has brought a silky texture and an extra savoury dimension to this wines rich plum and raisin fruit notes, Cabernet Franc in the blend gives structure.

  • Chateau Fourcas Hosten 2017 (Listrac) (red wine) - Château Fourcas Hosten is now owned by Hermès family heirs and the estate has seen significant investment. Every year, the quality goes up and it offers excellent value for money. This benchmark modern Bordeaux is a balanced and elegant blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a little Petit Verdot. Château Fourcas Hosten shows well-expressed blackberry fruit character, quite vigorous and good ripe tannins and an intense fruit filled finish.
