Lynne’s Inside Track:
“The 2020 Château Phélan Ségur, which we were able to taste in Dublin, is laden with intense black fruits. The palate is full and firm with a ripe tannin profile and some alluring savoury notes, it finishes fresh and pure fruited hinting at its developing elegance and ageing potential.”
-Lynne Coyle MW, Wine Director O’Briens Wines

Château Phélan Ségur was founded by Irishman Bernard Phelan at the beginning 19th century, when he combined two existing Saint-Estèphe vineyards. Upon Bernard’s death, in 1841, his son Frank Phelan took over the estate and expanded the vineyard holdings. Today the vineyards consist of 70ha of vines, divided into four distinct parts, the great diversity of this terroir accounts for Phélan Ségur’s signature complexity. The winery has exchanged hands a number of times and today is owned by Philippe Van de Vyvere. In 2011 the winery enjoyed a large investment and was upgraded with state-of-the-art winemaking equipment.
Potential Drinking Window 2026-2042

The austerity to the tannins works in this wine's favour giving a juicy grip to the concentrated blackcurrant and bilberry fruits without strangling them. Excellent stuff, finishing up with liquorice and smoked coffee bean. This is an estate that has just powered to better and better wines over the past few years. Yields were 10% below the average of the past five years but still at 40hl/ha. Harvest September 16 through to October 1, finishing around 10 days earlier than the past two years. Consultants Michel Rolland and Julien Viaud. First vintage with Petit Verdot included in the main wine (2%), from vines planted in 2013. Tasted twice.
