Margaux with Irish Heritage
cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot

Description

This Margaux estate dates to 1710, but it wasn’t until Irish businessman Mark Kirwan inherited the winery from his father-in-law did the name change to Château Kirwan and it earned the reputation for top quality wines. Mark Kirwan expanded the property and built the Château that still stands on the property today. Such was the reputation of Château Kirwan that it is one of the few Médoc estates visited by future US president, Thomas Jefferson, on his famous Bordeaux wine tour. The estate was recognised as a prestigious Third Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification and is one of the few estates that remains similar in size and terroir as when they were classified. Recent years has seen significant investment by the current owners, the Schyler family.

Potential Drinking Window 2028-2042

Dark chocolate powder and ripe blackcurrants on the nose. Succulent and supple on the palate, this has a nice bouncy, plush and plump feeling to it. It's not massively expansive but does have a great mouthfeel in terms of texture and overall generosity of flavours. Tannins are fine and the juicy acidity is really to the fore here alongside some lovely floral elements. Bright and perky though still quite linear, with a nice initial impact and long finish. This should improve during ageing.
- 91/100 Points, Decanter Wine Magazine

Tasting Note

The wine offers lovely fresh fruit with mingling aromas of cherry, strawberry and raspberry. These are complemented on the palate with subtle notes of spices. The wine displays a profile of tension and great precision. The palate is smooth, and the tannins are beautifully soft. The oak is discreet and very well-integrated. The finish is long and flavoursome rather than tannic.
