Rioja is undoubtedly the most important wine region in Spain and one of only two areas to have attained the highest classification of Spanish wine. The Tempranillo grape variety is king here, offering ripe plum and red berry flavours. The grape also has an affinity for oak, so there is a long tradition for ageing Rioja wines in barrels to add a lovely smoky and toasty flavour complexity to the best wines. To celebrate this famous region, we asked our Wine Team to choose some of their favourite Rioja wines for you to enjoy. Salud!

In this case you will receive two bottles of each of these exciting Rioja wines:
1. Sierra Cantabria Crianza
Sierra Cantabria is a family Bodegas dating back to 1870 and takes its name from the Sierra mountain range. Owner & winemaker, Marcus Eguren has made some of the most expensive and highly acclaimed wines in Spain and has a reputation for meticulous attention to quality. This Rioja Crianza enjoys the same winemaking attention: expect intense cherry notes, with a toasty undertone of cedar and a ripe purity of Tempranillo fruit. There are light floral traces and an elegant and spicy finish.
2. Monte Real Crianza
Coming from the historic Bodegas Riojanas, this wine is 100% Tempranillo grown in premium Cenicero vineyards in La Rioja Alta. The wine is aged for 18 months in American oak casks before resting in bottle for at least 6 months before release. Cherry & blackberry fruit on the nose, underpinned by notes of cocoa and cedar. Monte Real Crianza has a silky-smooth palate with soft tannins. The primary bramble fruit flavours are complemented by the sweet spice flavours of the oak traditional oak ageing.
3. Monte Real Tempranillo
The iconic Bodegas Riojanas estate was founded in 1890 and is steeped in Rioja's history. Made from the Tempranillo grape, this fruit driven unoaked wine is the perfect introduction to the Rioja region and the Bodegas wines. Bodegas Riojanas Tempranillo shows primary strawberry and blackberry fruit on the nose and palate, underlying this is silky a smooth texture balanced by a refreshing crisp acidity.
4. Bodegas Riojanas Borisa Reserva
Coming from our long-time Rioja partners, Bodegas Riojanas, this 100% Tempranillo was made in limited quantities to celebrate their 125th Anniversary of the estate. The grapes come from premium Cenicero Rioja vineyards after which the wine is aged for 26 months in American oak barrels. Borisa Rioja Reserva is elegant and harmonious on the nose with fine aromas of dark fruit and vanilla. The palate offers good fruit structure, fine acidity, polished tannins with a balanced persistent finish.
5. Marqués de Cáceres Reserva
Marqués de Cáceres is a family Bodegas making Rioja wines with Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes from some of the best vineyard sites in Rioja Alta and Alavesa. The wine is aged 20 months in new and used French oak barrels. Expect a complex bouquet of cherry, vanilla, and soft toasted notes. The palate is balanced and silky with well-defined tannins and crunchy bramble fruit.
6. Federico Paternina Gran Reserva
Bodegas Federico Paternina was founded in 1896 and named after its original founder. This Gran Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha and is aged for 24 months in American oak followed by three years in bottle in the winery's 16th century cellars. Paternina Rioja Gran Reserva has a complex palate of sweet plums and bramble fruits, savoury notes are underpinned by a touch of spice and gentle vanilla nuances from the American oak.
