Celebrating International Women's Day 2024

While the world of wine is still very much a male dominated one, a growing number of women are making strides in vineyards across the world. They’re instigating change, creating fantastic wines and leading the way for the next generation of winemakers. In celebration of International Women’s Day 2024, we wanted to highlight the work of these pioneering women and asked some of the O’Briens team to select their favourite wines from female winemakers.

Rós Rosé

Navarra, Spain

Winemaker: Lynne Coyle Master of Wine

Recommended by: Katrina McEvoy, O'Briens Wines Direct Sales Teams

RRP: €16.95

"Rós Rosé is made by O’Briens Wine Director, Lynne Coyle and Alicia Eyaralar of Bodega Tandem. The grapes come from a sustainably farmed two-hectare plot of old Garnacha vines and the wine is made following minimal intervention practices. I love the elegant design on the label, inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, it is definitely a point of difference if looking for a beautiful bottle of wine as a gift for someone special."

Katrina’s tasting note: Classic strawberry and raspberry aromas on the nose, the palate is dry with ripe berry fruit and refreshing acidity.

Katrina’s food match: Vegetable and seafood tapas.

Winemaker Delphine Glangetas from Domaine de L'Ostal

Domaine de L'Ostal Estibals

Minervois, France

Winemaker: Delphine Glangetas

Recommended by: Carmel Carroll, Store Manager O’Briens Wines Ardkeen

RRP: €17.45

"I tasted this wine for the first time shortly after I joined the O’Briens team in 2017. I was hooked straight away. The wine comes from JM Cazes who are the owners of Château Lynch-Bages in Bordeaux. Although the wine is made in the Languedoc, it is aged in oak casks from the Bordeaux estate, which adds to its credence. The magnum is drinking really well and makes a great gift for a dinner party."

Carmel's tasting note: Rich and dense, it is loaded with dark fruit and spice, the lingering dry finish makes it a great flexible food wine.

Carmel's food match: Slow cooked lamb or beef.

Delheim Pinotage Rosé

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Winemaker: CEO and winemaker Nora Sperling

Recommended by: Emma Kruger, Store Assistant Manager O’Briens Wines Galway

RRP: €14.95

"I had always believed that I was never going to like rosés until I had the pleasure of trying this stunningly crisp and juicy Delheim Pinotage rosé by chance. Not only have I fallen in love with its decadent, almost fruit basket-like aromas and taste but after learning about the Delheim estate it only made my admiration for this wine grow stronger. In addition to Delheim practicing sustainable farming, the support they give their workers and people living on their estate is phenomenal. This rosé was an easy pick for me, not just for the stunning quality and mouthwatering taste but because of the love and care I know is put into it."

Emma's tasting note: A radiant pink hue with aromas of pomegranate, cranberry and cherries with hints of floral notes. The palate is juicy, fresh and crisp with hints of succulent strawberry, grapefruit and other sweet berries.

Emma's food pairing: Seasonal salads, fresh fish and chicken.
