New Year New Beer

New Year New Beer

By Paul Barry | Assistant Buyer: Beer & Spirits

We are full up with imperial stouts and barrel aged beers. Don’t get me wrong, there have been some truly outstanding beers released over the last couple of months and I have thoroughly enjoyed them. However, as the new year progresses I after some refreshing and fruity alternatives. The weather may still say winter, but my mind is turned to crisp lagers and soft, fruity and hoppy beers. So, this week I am looking at two great new lagers and two Double IPA’s for when the situation calls for something more robust.

Curious Society Pilsner

A new core range release from Kildare brewers Larkins. A classic German style pils. The aroma is of sweet grain and light malt (brown crackers) with distinctive flowery and herbal hop notes. The light malt character carries to the flavour supporting the herbal and spicy hop notes which become more evident. Clean and bitter on the finish.

Pick up an eight pack of cans for just €13 in January.

Wicklow Wolf Somewhere Far Away

On the hoppier side we have a limited release form Wicklow Wolf. The latest in their Endangered Species series is an India Pale Lager that champions two super fresh New Zealand hops, Nelson Sauvin and Motueka. These two hops come from the north west of the South island of New Zealand famed for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc wine. Two bountiful dry hop additions allow these hops come to the forefront of the beer bringing a burst of soft fruits, grape, gooseberry and floral hints with a clean, crisp and fruity finish.

To Øl #DIPD

This Danish brewer has been wowing us over the last year. Their newest core range release is certainly one to try out. Expect lots of punchy fruit aromas and flavours with mango, papaya, tangerine and grapefruit. Finishes with a bitter hoppy bite, light citrus notes and pine resin.

Whiplash Disco Mystic DIPD

Our final beer this week is from Dublin’s hop-masters, Whiplash. This double IPA continues in the style they are most famous for, a hazy beer with low bitterness and a full, soft, oaty body holding up lots of fruit character. Expect tropical tones with bright passion fruit, peach and pineapple.
