Saint Valentine & Rosé Wine

By Lynne Coyle MW | O'Briens Wine Director

In recent years the popularity of rosé wine has increased so much that we almost don’t need the traditional excuse of Valentine’s day to enjoy a glass. If you choose to open a bottle this year to celebrate the memory of the 3rd century Roman saint, you will be in very good company.

These days even the rich and famous are getting in on the rosé act with Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Sarah Jessica Parker and most recently Jon Bon Jovi starting their own rosé wine projects.

So, we would urge you to get in on the rosé trend this Valentine’s Day using a few of our rosé wine tips below - be it with a loved one, your friends or as part of your Galentine celebrations!

The Romantic Dinner

Rosé is one of the most versatile wine styles. Experiment with different dishes, from shellfish with the dryer styles through sushi and pasta to strawberries with the riper styles the possibilities are endless.

Pick Your Loved Ones Favourite Wine Country or Grape Variety

As chances are there will be a rosé wine from there. All key wine producing countries that grow red grapes can make rosé wine. Well known international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec and Pinot Noir are used along with, for example, in Italy native grapes such as Corvina and Rondinella.

Pink for Romance?

The colour of rosé wines range between the most delicate of pale pinks through to deeper ruby tinged examples. These colours are defined in the first instance by the type of black grapes used and their skin thickness. Choose the colour that appeals to you, generally, as the colour darkens, the flavour tends to intensify.

What temperature should my rosé wine be?

Serve your pink wine straight from the fridge or the ice bucket, 8 - 10 degrees celsius is perfect.
