Spain, Wine Land of Plenty

By Lynne Coyle MW | O'Briens Wine Director

As our Spanish Wine Sale launches, we are reflecting on that fact that, in wine terms Spain really does have it all. From crisp refreshing whites, through sumptuous red berried full flavoured reds and silky Rioja with a peppering of sparkling and solera aged wines, there truly is something for everyone and a fun journey of exploration to be had.

Valhondo Brut Cava

Made in the same way as Champagne, Cava undergoes a second fermentation and ageing in bottle before we see it on our shelves. The grapes are different however, whilst there is a small amount of Chardonnay in the blend, the main varieties used are the local are Macabeo and Xarello. Valhondo Cava is elegantly structured, dry, and refreshing with crisp apple aromas and a hint of toast on the palate.

Viña Vedra Albariño

Made by Paco & Lola, an innovative group of four hundred independent grape growers from Rías Baixas, Galicia. The grapes for this Albariño are grown in sustainably farmed Atlantic influenced vineyards in some of the best sites in the Salnés Valley. Viña Vedra has bright floral notes and orchard fruits of peach, greengage, and granny smith apple. The palate is lemon fresh with a bone-dry palate and a refreshing zesty, citrus edge to the finish.

Alma Godello

Alma Godello is made by Pazo do Mar, a modern family winery based in Monterrei, a small region within Galicia on the Portuguese border. Slightly richer in style than Albarino, the Godello grape is known for its complexity balanced by finesse and elegance. Alma Godello is a fresh lively wine with aromas and flavours of red apple, pineapple and lime zest underpinned by a crisp backbone and a stone note, Alma Godello works perfectly with tapas dishes.

Altos de Luzón

Altos de Luzón is made by the family-owned Bodegas Luzón in Jumilla, Spain. One of the top, most awarded wineries in the region, the Altos is made from 100% Monastrell which thrives in the warm, dry continental climate. Altos de Luzón is rich with ripe blackberry fruit, complemented by integrated toast and sweet spices lifted from the twelve months ageing in French and American oak barrels

Marqués de la Concordia Reserva

Marqués de la Concordia belongs to a collection of premium wineries, this is a classic Rioja with its vineyards located in the higher altitude area of Rioja Alta. 100 % Tempranillo, the wine is traditionally aged in American and French oak. Marqués de la Concordia Rioja Reserva displays sweet red berried and bramble fruit, the oak is well integrated, and a touch of spice adds warmth to the velvety tannins.

Toro Albalá Viejísimo Amontillado 50cl

From a foundation solera dating to 1922, this is a complex and dry Amontillado from the small Montilla-Moriles region of northern Andalucía. Made with the Pedro Ximenez grape it is highly aromatic with a spice, dried fruit and fine pastry backdrop. The palate is mineral, elegant and persistent with nuances of the wood in which it was aged. A clear oxidative character of dried fruits and almond. Serve slightly chilled with slaty hard cheese and roasted almonds for a real treat.
