The Taste Test: Our Master Of Wine Tries Whispering Angel Rosé

It’s the wine that almost broke the internet, an Instagram star that has become a must-try for any rosé fan. Hailing from the vineyards of Château d’Esclans in France’s Provence region, it's no exaggeration to say that Whispering Angel is now the most iconic rosé wine in the world.

Here, O'Briens Wine Director Lynne Coyle Master of Wine gives her verdict.

A Provençal blend

“Whispering Angel is a blend of Syrah and grenache, two red grapes, and vermentino, a white grape variety, which give it a beautiful pale colour - a benchmark colour for Provence and also much emulated around the world,” Lynne explains.

Fresh and fruity

“In terms of the aroma profile, you have strawberries, you have raspberries. There’s a hint of Mediterranean herb such as thyme and it's very, very fruity,” she says.

When it comes to Whispering Angel’s flavour, it’s crisp and fresh with notes of strawberries and cream, a touch of thyme and a note of salinity. “It’s a perfect summer wine,” Lynne says, “and fantastic with food.”
