The O’Brien family purchased and opened a grocery store in Bray Co. Wicklow in 1944. As well as general grocery items, they stocked ports and sherries along with a limited range of wine and beers.
There were 12 children in the O’Brien family (9 sons and 3 daughters) of which four took a keen interest in the business; Jim, Brendan, Dermot and Kevin. With the exception of Dermot all brothers are still actively involved in the business today.
In the 1970’s as interest in wines, beers and spirits increased in Ireland, the O’Briens Group started to sell a wider range of these products and in 1970 The O’Briens Group bought their second store in Greystones, Co. Wicklow, 25 years after first arriving in Bray. Three years later in 1973 they took their first venture into Dublin, purchasing the Dun Laoghaire store.
In 1979 the acquisition of the Wine Corner in Donnybrook store introduced a number of direct relationships with wineries and winemakers some of which have been maintained to this day. In 1997, a decision was made to put in place a new management team with a view to expanding and developing the business. The business was rebranded from O’Briens Fine Wines to O’Briens Wine Off–Licence. The product range was extensively renewed and expanded to encompass the future needs of Irish wine drinkers.
Today, with 32 stores and over 250 staff currently employed, continued growth of the group is governed by the family’s five core values of great retail – value for money, knowledgeable and friendly staff, an exciting and relevant product offering, a relaxed retail environment and the right store location. Managing director Brendan O’Brien is adamant that these core values will not change and will continue to form the building blocks of the company long into the future.
