Château Kirwan
Margaux, Bordeaux

Located in the Margaux Appellation of the Haut-Médoc, Château Kirwan is named after Irish businessman, Mark Kirwan. In 1926 the Schÿer family purchased the Third Growth and invested heavily in the property. Philippe Delfaut has been the managing director and winemaker of the 45 hectare estate since 2007.

Margaux is located on the Left Bank of the Gironde river in Bordeaux's Haut-Médoc. The region experiences a temperate oceanic climate, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Garonne river to the east. The free draining gravel soils allow vines to push their roots deep into the water table. Château Kirwan carries out most of its viticulture with respect to organic farming. The estate grows the classic Bordeaux varieties, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The key to Philippe Delfaut’s winemaking philosophy is to be as gentle as possible with the grapes in the vineyard and winery: from traditional hand sorting to modern gravity destemming, the grapes reach fermentation in perfect condition. The estate’s uses modern stainless steel and traditional French oak for ageing.
