Lynne’s Inside Track: “This is an impressive vintage of Kirwan: elegant and fresh with those distinct floral notes, typical of the best Margaux, integrated with ripe black fruit flavours on an intense, but well-rounded palate.” -Lynne Coyle MW, Wine Director O’Briens Wines
This Margaux estate dates to 1710, but it wasn’t until Irish businessman Mark Kirwan inherited the winery from his father-in-law did the name change to Château Kirwan and it earned the reputation for top quality wines. Mark Kirwan expanded the property and built the Château that still stands on the property today. Such was the reputation of Château Kirwan that it is one of the few Médoc estates visited by future US president, Thomas Jefferson, on his famous Bordeaux wine tour. The estate was recognised as a prestigious Third Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, and is one of the few estates that remains similar in size and terroir as when they were classified. Recent years has seen significant investment by the current owners, the Schyler family, and this has helped shape the past three vintages as some of the best in recent history, with the 2020 having the potential to be the best of the trilogy. If cellared well, this wine will evolve further depths of flavour and layers of complexity over many years. Potential Drinking Window 2028-2042
Extremely exotic on the nose with crushed blackcurrants, raspberries and peaches, following through to a full-bodied palate with wonderful, refined tannins that are creamy and velvety in texture. Very long and persistent with a caressing finish. Best of the trilogy? - 94/95 Points, James Suckling
