Toro Albalá is a family-owned bodega, founded in 1922 in the Andalusían wine region of Montilla-Moriles. Antonio Sánchez, nephew of the winery's founder, has been Head Winemaker since the 1960s.
Montilla-Moriles is a small wine producing region located in the northern reaches of Spain’s Andalusía province. The climate is continental with short cold winters followed by long, hot, dry summers. The main grape variety is Pedro Ximenez, which is ideally suited to these hot, arid conditions and the local chalky Albariza soil.
Head Winemaker, the charismatic Antonio Sánchez, crafts wines in solera ageing systems, similar to those in Sherry, whereby the latest vintage wine is fractionally blended with wines from previous vintages to create complex and distinct wines of unique character. Toro Albalá are one of the few wineries to produce statically aged wines, releasing exquisite old vintage Pedro Ximenez.
The wines are aged in large format, old American oak casks to allow controlled oxidation without too much influence from the wood.
