Last weekend saw another hugely successful O'Briens Wine Festival, celebrated in Cork and Dublin. It was a wonderful few days and on behalf of all our staff, our winemakers and our charity partners (Irish Guide Dogs in Cork and Jack & Jill Children's Foundation in Dublin) O'Briens would like to thank all of our customers for their enthusiastic support of all things vinous and look forward to seeing you at the Spring Festival.
If you missed the excitement of the Wine Festival, fret not. Black Friday is this week and with it sees the launch of our most eagerly anticipated Loyalty promotion of the year: 20% BACK on your Loyalty card when you purchase 6 or more bottles of wine between Friday 23rd November & Sunday 02nd December.
We traditionally see a lot of corporate gift business during this promotion, but our more savvy customers are making their lists (and checking them twice) to stock up on wines for the fast-approaching Festive Season. This is the best Loyalty deal we hold each year and includes all of the wines already reduced in our Christmas promotional lineup. So to help you get your basket ready and take advantage of this unbeatable promotion, here are some of my top party wine picks.
If you are hosting a party over the Festive Season, now is the time to stock up on the wine. Not only will this help spread the cost of an already expensive time of the year, but by taking advantage of 20% Back on your Loyalty card now you can treat yourself to that special Christmas day bottle on us!
For a party wine there are a few guidelines I recommend you follow. Pick a crowd-pleasing fresh and fruity style with a moderate alcohol level that will suit as many of your guests as possible. Perhaps opting for a lesser-known region or grape variety will stretch your budget that bit further. Our new white and red Romanian pair of wines from Wildflower offer two of the most popular grape varieties- Pinot Grigio & Pinot Noir- at €8.95 per bottle.
Romania is the 6th largest wine producing nation in Europe and it's easy to see why with the quality-to-value ratio on show with this pair. But don't just take my word for it: the Irish press have been enamored by these little wines too.
"Attractive plump ripe melon and green apple fruits. Perfect party wine, or with lighter salads. At €8.95 a steal."
John Wilson, Irishtimes.com
"Has Romania found its mojo again for quality reds sold at bargain prices? If this Pinot is anything to go by the answer is yes. Lovely waves of cherry and raspberry flavours on a soft and silky palate. Well worth stocking up at this price."
Matthew Nugent, The Irish Sun
If you are hosting formal dinner occasion over the festive season will tend to have less guests than a large festive party, so you may want to spend a little more to get a good-quality, food-friendly wine. For these events I recommend a slightly more recognisable wine, but still coming in under €10 to preserve your budget.
A personal favourite is the Domaine Duffour. Made with the Colombard and Ugni Blanc grape varieties this wine hails from the Gascony region of southern France. The warm southern French sunshine brings tropical fruit and citrus flavours, but the altitude of the vineyards retains a fresh line of acidity that makes this a wonderfully food-friendly wine. Enjoy it with seafood and fresh shellfish.
For those that would rather red wine, I recommend the excellent value La Vielle Capitelle from top winemaker Gérard Bertrand. Made with a blend of Syrah and Grenache grapes and coming from the warmth of southern France, this is a soft, supple wine bursting with red berry fruits, sweet spice and moderate tannin. This would pair perfectly with the sweet meat of roast lamb.
