With so many exceptional offers, it was difficult to narrow down my favourites in the sale lineup, but below are my top 5 picks. And remember stocks of these offers are limited and only available in-store, so hurry down to your local O'Briens to grab that special festive bottle.
Château Fourcas-Hosten, Listrac-Médoc 2007
€19.95, down from €29.95 for the Fine Wine Sale
At €19.95, Château Fourcas-Hosten 2007 offers incredible value for an aged Bordeaux. Hailing from Listrac-Médoc, the time in bottle has softened the tannin profile of this wine, adding delicious savoury leather and tobacco notes to accompany the dark plum and bramble fruits. An excellent festive gift for the Bordeaux lover in your life.
Famille JM Cazes Pauillac 2015
€29.95, down from €39.95 for the Fine Wine Sale
There are plenty of other Bordeaux to choose from in the Fine Wine Sale, but few offer better value than the Famille JM Cazes Pauillac 2015. Coming from an exceptional vintage in the most prestigious Left Bank appellation in Bordeaux this is the third wine of Château Lynch-Bages. It receives the same care and attention as their top cuvée, with the added benefit of being ready to drink now. Boasting a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (74%) this has fine grippy tannins to accompany blackberry, black tea and cedar wood flavours. Aged 12 months in second use oak there are underlying complex savoury notes that will further develop with age.. if you have the willpower to lay a bottle down for a few years!
Domaine des Sénéchaux Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2015
€29.95, down from €43.95 for the Fine Wine Sale
As the perfect accompaniment to Turkey and all the trimmings, there are few better matches in the world of fine wine than Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The most famous of the southern Rhône crus, it came to prominence as far back as the 14th century when a split in the Roman Catholic church saw a papal residence founded in nearby Avignon. The vineyards are famous for their large round 'galet' stones which help with the even ripening of the grapes by retaining heat through the night. The best wines from the region display both power and elegance and can age incredibly well. One of the finest examples from the region is produced by the same Bordeaux house as the wine above: Château Lynch-Bages.
Domaines des Sénéchaux Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an exceptional, multi-award winning wine with buckets of concentrated red and black fruit flavours alongside layers of sweet spice and toast from the oak aging. It displays wonderful balance and length, yet an underlying elegance. It is the quality of wines like this that Chateauneuf-du-Pape is regarded as one of the finest wine producing regions of the world.
Musella Amarone Riserva 2011
€39.95, down from €52 for the Fine Wine Sale
The top wines from Italy are well represented in our Fine Wine Sale also. Amarone is considered by many to be the quintessential Italian wine style. Produced from semi-dried grapes these wines are rich and full-bodied, but retain a refreshing acidity to balance the power of the wine. With the Masi Costasera Amarone (€36.95 from €46) and Rizzardi 3 Cru Amarone (€24.95 from €34.95), the very pinnacle of Italian wine families are represented in our sale, but my pick is the Musella Amarone Riserva.
Musella are a biodynamic winery, eschewing the use of chemical pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers to ensure there is a natural balance in the vineyard. This helps produce the healthiest fruit for their Amarone. After picking, the grapes are laid in wooden crates in temperature controlled rooms to dry out. During this Apassimento process, the grapes lose over a third of their water weight, concentrating the sugar and flavour compounds. When these grapes are fermented they produce a rich, bold wine with a concentrated flavour profile. Musella then ages the Amarone in large oak vats to add an extra layer of complexity and flavour.
This wine offers plenty of dark brooding fruits, sweet spice and a toasty complexity. Wonderfully aromatic and concentrated this is a simply stunning wine that would be the perfect centre piece for the Festive dining table.
Seguin Manuel Montagny Premier Cru "Vigne du Soleil" 2016
€19.95, down from €29.95
There are plenty of iconic white wines in the Fine Wine Sale lineup- €7 off Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc, €10 off the incredible Henri Bourgeois Sancerre d'Antan and €11 off the top white Burgundy, Chanson Meursault.
But my pick of the bunch is the Seguin Manuel Montagny Premier Cru. Coming from a small quality-focused producer, Montagny offers some of the best value wines in Burgundy. Made with Chardonnay and fermented in oak, before 1 year aging on the lees (spent yeast cells) this is a rich and honeyed Burgundy. With an intense nose of ripe apple, pear and almonds this powerful enough to stand up to a hearty meal. Yet it is elegant and balanced enough not to be overpowering. The palate offers plenty of ripe green and stone fruits alongside the toast and nutty complexity of the oak. This wine is all about balance and precision- with a toasty and creamy palate this would make a great match to the darker cuts of turkey.
There are plenty more great offers in-store this weekend, so drop down to your local O'Briens Wine where our friendly staff will be happy to help you pick out that perfect festive bottle.
