As autumn settles in, I like to savour every last opportunity to the enjoy fresher and more elegant styles of wine, before winter takes hold and my tastes tend to shift toward heavier reds and richer whites to complement the richer, more robust dishes on the table.
Regardless of the weather outside, for me the fresh character of these wines enjoyed at this time of year is almost like an Indian Summer in a glass! I have picked out a few such wines below, all of which are on offer for just €10.
So while there may be chocolate Santas and Christmas decorations on the supermarket shelves, why not join me and put all thoughts of Winter off for another little while and make the most of this season!
Atlantic Vineyards is made from specially selected blocks of Sauvignon Blanc at the Diemersdal Estate in Durbanville, South Africa, which benefit from cooling sea breezes blowing in from the Atlantic (hence the Name). Winemaker Thys Louw’s family have owned the Diemersdal Estate for six generations. Benefitting from all this experience and of course the superb location, Thys has produced a Sauvignon Blanc bursting with gooseberry, juicy tropical fruit and zesty lime flavours coupled with a crisp refreshing finish.
Owners of one of leading family-owned wineries in Italy, the Pasqua family are dedicated to growing high-quality grapes and making great value wines that truly express the character of the Veneto wine region, so it should come as no surprise that theirs is an excellent Pinot Grigio. Aromas of ripe pear and white peach are perfectly balanced with the zesty finish.
Ars In Vitro is a seriously-sophisticated wine from a small 'quality-obsessed' producer in Navarra. Winemaker Alicia’s philosophy is one of minimal intervention, so unlike many Spanish reds, this wine is un-oaked, but don’t assume that equates to a simple wine. Far from it, Ars In Vitro is savoury, complex & multi-layered with deep, dark-berry and damson fruit, well-structured with long-lasting flavours and tremendous depth.
From the outstanding 2015 vintage, Les Trois Oratoires is made exclusively with grapes picked from Laudun Chusclan’s vineyards, which are located along the right bank of the Rhône, just 15 km from Châteauneuf du Pape. This winning combination of vineyard and vintage has resulted in an excellent Côtes du Rhône with wonderfully-ripe bramble fruit which is complemented by a quite-surprising degree of elegance to the palate.
