Sunshine & Cider

Sunshine & Cider

Perfect cider weather one might say.

While cider can certainly be enjoyed year-round there is something about warm weather and cold cider that just goes so well together. Perhaps it’s also because it matches so well with summer cuisine.

Cider making has a lot in common with wine making, for both creating a great tasting drink is all about achieving balance between the fruit character, sweetness, acidity, tannin, and alcohol. It follows then that, as a general rule of thumb, if a food matches well with white wine it should pair well with cider, so think seafood, mildly spiced Asian or Indian and creamy cheeses. A perfect match for that crisp summer salad as well.

To celebrate the good weather, and hoping for a continuation we have a great selection of craft ciders on offer at 3 for €9 for the month of May. So, with that here are just a few picks to try this weekend, ideally enjoyed chilled from the fridge, around 7°C, avoiding ice which dilutes the flavours of these great ciders and served in a stemmed glass.

Made from apples hand harvested on family owned orchards in the Boyne valley, and fermented with wild yeast Dan Kelly’s is a robust medium-dry cider with superb depth of flavour. Cider apples are blended with some Bramley for a tart finish.

New to our range, Legacy hails from Dungarvan Co. Waterford. They produce an excellent medium-dry cider, while their newest addition, the sweeter, Medium is perfect for those with a sweeter tooth.  This brings a natural sweetness and red apple character without losing the crisp finish.

For something a little different we a cider from across the water. Thatchers have been making cider in Somerset for over 100 years. One of their more recent additions is Thatchers Haze. This is a naturally hazy cider, crisp and sweet with the haze coming from the juice of the Jonagold eat apple.

Finally rounding up with a cider from orchards situated on the gentle slopes of the Blackwater valley comes Longueville House cider. Longueville use only cider varieties grown on their own grown estate and naturally fermented with wild yeast. This is a fine, crisp yet lively medium dry cider.

All these ciders, and more besides, are available in our 3 for €9 promotion in May. I hope you enjoy these great Irish ciders in the sunshine, between the inevitable showers!

Please note prices are correct at time of publishing, offer ends 3rd June 2019. Please check our website or stores for the most up to date pricing.
