Last Monday, the 24th of February, saw the grand opening of a Stunning new winery for Gérard Bertrand. After a guided tour of the winery and an inaugural speech from Gérard Bertrand and Jean-Frédéric Lusher, the Architect, 400 invited guests (including Kevin O’Brien) were treated to a sumptuous Gala dinner showcasing the finest food of the Languedoc partnered with Gérard’s wonderful wines.
Gérard Bertrand is the proprietor of 410 hectares of vineyards across the most beautiful Languedoc terroirs. He has pioneered a quality benchmark for the region and his wines are expressive, balanced and elegant and they represent a very honest reflection of the Languedoc at very approachable prices.
This Southern French superstar rugby player turned winemaker also consults at a number of other wineries in the region.
Whether he is working at his own winery or consulting elsewhere, the hallmarks of his winemaking style are easy to see, rich concentrated fruit, velvet tannins and great fruit-acid balance and of course, always honest wines at affordable prices.
I have highlighted a couple of examples of each below.
Domaine de l'Aigle Chardonnay ( €17.99 down from € 19.49 ) This barrel aged Chardonnay from the Languedoc clearly shows the advantage of high altitude vineyards. There is a cool elegance of fruit to this wine and with a creamy feel balanced by fine acidity it tastes and feels like a very expensive wine.
Gerard Bertrand Domaine Haut St Georges Corbieres ( €12.99 down from € 17.49 ) Made in the year that Gérard Bertrand won European Winery of the Year, this outstanding Corbières is the sister estate to Bertrand's Domaine de Villemajou and copies its sibling's voluptuous style.
Château Remaury ( €11.99 down from € 14.49 ) With Gérard Bertrand acting as consultant winemaker, Remaury is always recognisable by its wonderful fruit ripeness which clearly defines the style of this excellent Château wine.
Chateau St Esteve ( €12.99 down from € 15.49 ) Terrific Château wine from this historic estate. The kind of wine that only comes along once in a while but when it does it massively over delivers. Gorgeous black fruit, great structure and complexity. Anyone who likes great French wine should love this.
